On a nature walk Jane had the idea that "ALL SPIDERS COME OUT BECAUSE IT IS FALL."

So we asked: WHY do spiders come out in the fall? Here is what we heard:

Because they want a home and they make Spider webs. Jack

Maybe they like the fall because it is cold. Coco

They want to find a spider web they don’t have to make. Olivia

They want to find bugs to eat. Addie

They want to find a home so they are cozy and warm. Orli

They want to catch some food. So they can make spider webs to catch some food. Jane

They can make spider webs because they need to find a home to live in for the fall. Karlee

They are poisonous. I wonder if poison can make the fall really nice? Carl

Spiders never get tired of making webs. When the bugs are around in the fall spiders can catch them with their string to ear. Jane

I think they like the fall because it is cold. Sally

Because they like the weather so they come out. Eliot

This simple Science Talk inspired and INVESTIGATION into BUGS- not just spiders but insects too.
Ms. Meredith found a LARGE spider in her home and we took a day to watch it. After the day though we decided it would be happiest set free- a theme we have talked about A LOT and explored in the story Bog Baby.

We also made insect masks for imaginary play and invited a BUG HUNT for our following NATURE WALK.

During a closing circle the children were asked: What do we wonder about BUGS? What do we want to know more about?

Why do Spiders make webs? Karlee
How do flies fly? Jack
How do wings work for flying? Jane
How do spiders get out of their webs and why do they? Coco
How do spiders get food and bring it back to their webs? Orli
When do spiders make their webs? Addie
Do insects have friends? Carl
I wonder if their friends are other bugs? Helo
Do all spiders always spin webs? Noah
How do spiders crawl? Olivia
Do bugs like to play? Sally
